Mrs.
Carrie Elizabeth McSpadden, 92, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010, at
Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center, Norfolk. Mrs. McSpadden was
preceded in death by her husband, James Randolph McSpadden Sr.
Beginning in 1941, Mrs. McSpadden worked in the Adjutant
General's Office in the War Department, Washington, D.C., and
later received the following commendation from the Rear
Admiral's Office of her command. "In the early days of the
Second World War, you courageously accepted a promotional
transfer to the War Department Special Services Division in
Hollywood, Calif., where you worked with the leadership of such
talent as Col. Frank Capra, Major William Hornbeck and Walt
Disney." Between 1953 - 1974, she worked as the church secretary
at Ocean View Presbyterian Church and served as a Sunday school
teacher and elder. In her final years of employment, she was an
administrative assistant in the Naval Facilities Engineering
Command, retiring in September 1990. She was an accomplished
photographer, winning numerous awards, and was a member of the
Chesapeake Bay Art Association. Mrs. McSpadden was an
enthusiastic world traveler who also enjoyed dancing and working
with people in the Ocean View Civic League, National Association
of Retired Federal Employees, Sixty Plus Club, Norfolk Fitness
and Wellness Center, and Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. She
is survived by her son, James Randolph McSpadden Jr. and his
wife Kay Darwin McSpadden of Rock Hill, S.C.; and two grandsons,
James R. McSpadden III of Leiden, Netherlands, and William
Darwin McSpadden of Rock Hill, S.C. She is also survived by
several nieces and nephews including Teresa Langley, Guin, Ala.,
Glenda Pourciau and her husband Eugene Pourciau, Baton Rouge,
La., Paula Ballard, Norfolk, Donna Mistretta and her husband
Butch Mistretta, Cary, N.C., Barbara Maggiore (and husband
Joseph), Norfolk, and the departed Julia Beth Tumey from Baton
Rouge and Russell Crump Sigman Jr., Wilmington, N.C.;
grandnieces and -nephews, Adrienne Ballard-Conner (her husband
Chuck Conner), Norfolk, Hunter Ballard, Norfolk, Dr. Kenna
Stephenson (her husband Dr. Doug Stephenson) Hallsville, Texas,
Donna Beth Cox (and her husband Doug Cox), Baton Rouge, Joelle
Craft (and her husband Bruce Craft) of Baton Rouge, Danny
Pourciau, Colorado Springs, Colo., Michelle Malmin, Honolulu,
Hawaii, Sean Mistretta of Charlotte, N.C., Kyle Mistretta, Cary,
N.C., Russell Crump Sigman III, Amanda Blanton, Placentia,
Calif., Aaron Blanton, Bobby Ed Chase, Jackson, Miss., Suzonna
Maglone, Baton Rouge, Wanda Hughes (and her husband Glenn
Hughes), Beaverton, Ala., Carolyn Markam, Toney, Ala. A
visitation will be held today, Aug. 25, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at
Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. The
graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, at
Forest Lawn Cemetery and the funeral at Ocean View Presbyterian
Church Thursday, Aug. 26, at 3 p.m. The Rev. Art Jensen and Dr.
Dwight Webster Sr. will officiate. Gifts and memorials (in lieu
