
Dorothy Hudgins, a Norfolk native, has been drawing and painting since childhood. She has studied under Retha Sedel, who was a prominent and well-known artist; Norman Goodwin of ODU, watercolorist Philip Sterk, and Barclay Sheaks at Virginia Weslyan College.
A retired registered nurse, she moved to nags Head, NC in 1990, and stayed for two years. She taught acrylics and was featured in the Outer Banks Magazine for her work.
She has been active in the Outer Banks Art Association, Chesapeake Bay Art Association, Chesapeake Bay Watercolorists, Backbay Waterfowl Guild, Tidewater Art Association, and the Art Alliance Association.
She has exhibited in galleries in Manteo, NC; the Feather and Wood Wildfowl Gallery, Virginia Beach; the Studio Arts in the Ocean View Section of Norfolk, where she taught watercolor workshops. She is also continuing to teach in her home studio.
She is a prolific artist who maintains quality and excellence in her work as evidenced by numerous ribbons and awards. Recipient of the Grumbacher Award in 1998, she is known for her paintings of Ocean View, of which "Leap the Dips" was purchased as the first original painting for the Ocean View Station Museum.
On describing her work, Dorothy says, "I want each of my paintings to create a mood. I spend a great deal of time observing, sketching and photographing reference material to be original. I consider my style to be relaxed realism."
